The dining room is the place everyone comes together to share meals and create memories. Taking the time to fully consider all your needs before you invest in a dining table is a wise decision. These days most dining rooms are rectangular in shape so we'll focus on how to calculate the right size rectangular dining room table.
Plan for your typical attendee size with the occasional annual or semi-annual increased head count. Allow for each person to be comfortably seated at the table with a minimum of 24" (28" ideally) in space. Also, be sure to account for additional room at each end of the table for those seated at the head (12" is ideal). Once you've calculated your idea table size you must also account for space around the table with a minimum of 30" before any obstruction (furniture or wall) on all four sides.
