The brief

The clients wanted a substantial walnut dining table with warm colour and a restrained live edge. The design paired a broad bookmatched top with simple black steel legs, keeping the focus on the wood.

Partial surfacing revealed the walnut’s figure and natural edge for review.

Walnut with a known origin

The selected walnut came from a tree at a family cottage near Beaverton, planted by the former owner's father. We purchased the tree standing and managed its felling, milling, drying and storage.

For this commission, we chose neighbouring slabs opened as a bookmatched pair. Their grain echoes on either side of the centre joint.

Choosing the table from Calgary

We partly surfaced the slabs so the clients could see their colour, figure and natural edge before making a selection. Photographs of the wood, their dining room concept and a written design summary gave each decision a clear reference.

The clients approved the slab pair and design before production. They were choosing the wood that would become their table, with the proportions, base and finish direction agreed in advance.

Shaping the table

Inset black steel U-shaped legs give the substantial top a simple foundation. We softened the live edge for everyday dining while retaining the natural line of the slabs.

The pair was joined, natural checks and voids were filled, and the top was finished to reveal the walnut's grain. Progress photographs kept the clients involved as the table took shape.
